Recommended computer books for appraisers

Note: these books are recommended and reviewed by Mary Dum, appraisal computer guru and editor of the REAMUG Journal, a six times a year computer publication for appraisers.

Real World Digital Photography, Industrial Strength Techniques, by Deke McClelland and Katrin Eismann, Peachpit Press, 1999 - 403 pages. Amazon.com Price: $35.99

This is the most comprehensive book on digital photography and digital imaging available for the general user. It includes chapters on how digital cameras work, the mechanics of digital imagery, the digital interface, and much more. One chapter deals with correcting photographs including straightening and cropping, improving brightness and contrast, and sharpening focus. The final chapter offers advice on archiving digital images on various types of media and cataloging and previewing images. This is by far the best book I have seen on the subject. Although it may contain more information than most appraisers need, it should be a part of the library of every serious practitioner of digital photography.

Easy Digital Photography, 2nd Edition, by Scott Slaughter, Abacus, 1999 - 327 pages. Amazon.com Price: $23.96
Click here to order from Amazon.com

Includes chapters on selecting and using digital cameras and scanners, plus light duty technical information. The included CD contains image editors, image managers, filters, plug-ins, etc. This is a reasonably useful book for the everyday digital image user, not highly technical but very friendly.

START with a Digital CAMERA, by John Odam, Peachpit Press, 1999, 146 pages, large format. Amazon.com Price: $27.99 Click here to order from Amazon.com

This book has received many good reviews in the general press. However, it is mostly about creative digital photography and printing techniques and is made up a small amount of text and a lot of digital images. It is quite interesting and well worth browsing, but if you want just one book of digital photography, this isn’t the correct choice.

(A) Few Scanning Tips, by Wayne Fulton. Go to his website, to read individual chapters or order the book online, $21.95 plus $5.00 shipping. To order, go to www.scantips.com/book.html

The 220 page self-published, softbound book is highly recommended by authors of other scanning books. It is full of down to earth information. If you want only one book on scanning for business or hobby use, this is the one.

Real World Scanning and Halftones, 2nd Edition, by David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman, and Steve Roth, Peachpit Press, 1998- 423 pages.Amazon.com Price: $23.96
Click here to order from Amazon.com

A companion to Real World Photography, this book was first published in 1993. Since then, computer graphics has greatly changed and color imaging has become popular. This is a thorough treatment of a technical subject and may be more comprehensive than most appraisal offices require. In particular, most of us do not need the section on halftones. Nevertheless, this is the definitive guide, well written and an excellent reference.
